Research Highlights Correlation Between AGEs and Skin Health

The AGEs Society (led by Myoung-Gyu Park) has identified that glyoxal-derived advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) accumulated in the skin trigger extreme oxidative stress and inflammation upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, accelerating skin aging and functional damage. The findings were published in the academic journal Scientific Reports.
Glyoxal is generated through various pathways, including metabolic processes, oxidative stress, hyperglycemia, and lipid peroxidation, and contributes to increased glycotoxin formation and oxidative damage.



AGEs are complex molecules produced through non-enzymatic reactions of glucose, glyoxal, and other reactive compounds with proteins, lipids, or DNA. These compounds primarily accumulate under hyperglycemic conditions and have been well established as being associated with diabetes and metabolic disorders. However, this study newly highlights the significant involvement of AGEs in skin aging and inflammation.
The AGEs Society stated, "A groundbreaking solution to suppress skin aging and inflammation is now being spotlighted with the patented KF140 strain. The patented strain Lactococcus lactis (KF140), developed by the association, has been confirmed to inhibit the production of AGEs or degrade and eliminate already-formed AGEs in the body. This effectively prevents skin cells from being damaged by AGEs, contributing significantly to reducing aging and inflammatory responses."
Meanwhile, the KF140 probiotic strain has demonstrated excellent efficacy in suppressing and removing AGEs. Its effects were validated in a study published in the SCI-indexed international journal Frontiers in Nutrition in June 2022.
